Intelligent Agent (IA) can be defined as a software program that exhibits forms of artificial intelligence, and are often based on pre-programmed rules that allow the software the ability to adapt and learn (Wikipedia, 2006, para 1). I would like to summaries three very interesting intelligent agents:

1) TextAloud (http://www.nextup.com/TextAloud/): TextAloud is a desktop intelligent agent that converts text to voice. TextAloud can read out loud emails, webpages, and any other text in your computer. Incredibly, it can be saved as MP3 or windows media files to be able to play in an iPod or handheld pc. One of its most important characteristics is its human-like voice. The website posted above shoes the unique uses of this intelligent agent like proofreading, like to important information while doing other things at home or office, helps people with vision problems to be able to take advantage of the computer and internet, and reduces eye strain. Anyone can take advantage of this agent. A free 15 days-trial can be downloaded with no obligation. What wonderful way for my three-year old to read her favorite stories online!

2) Intelligent Voice Operating System (IVOS) http://ivos.comunx.com/: IVOS is an agent that is programmed to learn the way a computer is being operated or used and one can then control the computer functions using the speech.  It is characterized by speech recognition and; it is a very effective way to create unique commands to have a better interaction with the computer, and to convert recorded dialog or speech to text. What a great way for people with disabilities to have control of the computer with only the voice.

3) Trout’s Internet Clock 2.8 (http://chemware.co.nz/tic.htm): It is an analog talking desktop clock useful for organization important reminders like birthdays, anniversaries, appointments, meetings with a message, song or picture. The agent synchronizes the computer’s time with the internet atomic clock. One of the capabilities is to see the different times zones. I can definitely use this agent to organize my work activities and set unique reminders.

These three agents are what we called desktop agents. They are all design to make the use of computers easier. In todays fast pace environment, the use of technology such as intelligent agents is essential. I selected to search these three agents because I am interested in improving the management of my information and the way I interact with my computer. I am surely thinking of downloading the free trial of all three to test how well it can help improve my busy and hectic lifestyle.
